unobtrusive style and comfort- the pictures- the setting and the food

The accommodations and serenity were a welcomed changed from city driving.

Too formal in some ways, and it was deserted.

The relaxing atmosphere which met you as soon as you entered the hotel. The staff were very professional, helpful and with a friendly attitude toward guests. The whole ambience of the place was like gracious living used to be. Just relax and be waited upon. The location with the views from the windows is quite stunning, especially the fact that a short walk brings you to the banks of the river Wye, splendid for evening walks after a day amongst the beautiful Elan Valley. Hope to visit again before too long.

    Not a thing!!

A lovely location in a beautiful part of the UK. The hotel building is very interesting, a lovely old country house with attractive surrounds. The front of house staff were very polite, friendly and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and large; the same for the en suite bathroom.

The hotel only offered evening dinner at £45 per head of several courses or the ability to have dinner in the Garden Room (when open) or Lounge. The menu for both of the latter was unchanging and the final straw for us was when we were offered that same 'soup of the day' 3 days running! We do not expect this from an hotel holding itself out as being of this standard. I also object to being charged £3.95 for a so called 'Bread Selection' that was meant to be speciality breads and olives (supposedly served as an hors d'oeuvre but which arrived with the main course only after reminding) but in fact consisted of two minute and mediocre rolls of some 6 cms diameter and some paltry olives in balsamic vinegar. At the same meal a salad was served that primarily consisted of chopped green peppers; hardly inspiring. One got the distinct impression that the chef was not interested in anyone not partaking of his/her £45 dinner menu. The Lounge area was also on the cold side although comfortable. Although our room was very comfortable, the bed had sheets and blankets that, personally, I don't like, preferring a duvet. Also, only a hand held shower in the bath, which could not be used properly without spraying water all over the floor. There was also a mix up over room rates. I was give one overall price by Booked.net for our total 3 days stay. What was not shown was that the Thursday and Friday, Saturday rates were different. We asked the hotel if we could stay an extra 4th (Sunday) night at the same daily room rate quoted by Booked.net (assuming this to be 1/3 of the total for the 3 days), which they agreed to. However, what was not made clear was that the room rate for the extra Sunday night was at the higher.weekend rate. I did query this with the hotel by e-mail on my return home but have received no reply. Not impressive. Overall my view is that this is a hotel that is resting on its past reputation and needs attention to detail.

Service, staff attention, food & wine, ambience all excellent; countryside around was beautiful, even if we only saw it in the rain!

Bathroom needing some work - bath surround leaked and having a shower without washing the floor was impossible!

  • Older travelers

The Hall is a wonderful building, set in stunning grounds, but the friendliness of the welcome really impressed us. It felt like staying with distant (and well-off) family rather than a hotel. Plus, the location is perfect for the Hay Festival.

Everything - this is a well run, service focused Hotel.

  • Couple

Felt like a social club, residents very friendly and relaxed

Grass was overgrown, facilities a bit dated and in need of repair

Expected shower in room but otherwise good
